Dry Powder Inhalers
Dry powder inhalers (DPI) are alternatives to hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propelled metered dose inhalers. Apart from not using propellants, their main advantage is that they are mostly breath activated and do not require the patient to synchronise actuation of the device with inhalation. The aerosol is generated in passive devices by the patient's inhalation force.
SkyeHaler™
An innovative dry powder device, the SkyeHaler™ was conceived in 1995. From early development onwards, the end user was in mind when designing its functionality
SkyeHaler™'s key features:
- Small and easy to use
The inhaler is "pocket-sized" and is loaded and activated in the single movement of opening the cap. - Interactive functions
The patient can hear, see and feel when the drug has been correctly inhaled. A dose will only be delivered upon correct inhalation, which ensures optimal patient compliance. - 'Intelligent' single dose counter
Only dispensed and aerosolized drug doses are counted. The counter shows the remaining number of doses. - Anatomically optimized mouthpiece
The mouthpiece forces the patient to position the inhaler correctly between lips. - No 'tail-off' effect
Due to built-in blocking mechanism after the last dose. - Long life
The reservoir contains up to 300 doses of the 5 mg metered powder pay load. Payloads of up to 20-25 mg are also feasible. The inhaler mouthpiece is detachable and very easy to clean. - Excellent technical performance
Even with moisture sensitive molecules thanks to SkyeProtect™ technology it is possible to maintain functionality throughout product shelf life.
The SkyeHaler™ has been approved by the US FDA, as part of the approval of Novartis' Foradil® CertiHaler® product.
