Fenofibrate, the active ingredient of Triglide®, is an oral fibrate that markedly reduces elevated plasma concentrations of triglycerides. Furthermore, fenofibrate decreases LDL and total cholesterol and raises abnormally low levels of HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol). However, the main drawback of some fenofibrate-based products is their insolubility in water, resulting in variable uptake from the stomach and requiring the patient to take the tablets with food.

Triglide®, SkyePharma’s formulation of fenofibrate, uses insoluble drug delivery IDD®-P technology, which has comparable absorption under both fed and fasting conditions. This allows patients to take the drug at any time, thereby improving compliance and simplicity for both patients and prescribers.

Triglide® is marketed in the United States by Sciele Pharma, Inc. and was launched in July 2005.
