Enhancing the therapeutic profile of Paxil™ for GSK

Paxil CR™ is an improved oral formulation of GlaxoSmithKline's Paxil™ (paroxetine), a leading selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant.  Paxil CR™, taken once a day, uses SkyePharma's Geomatrix™ technology to reduce gastrointestinal side-effects, a major cause of non-compliance, especially in new patients.

The use of Geomatrix™ in Paxil CR™ moves the location of absorption to the lower intestine, thereby reducing the incidence of nausea.  In clinical trials this resulted in a significant reduction in the drop-out rate due to adverse events and an improved efficacy.

Paxil CR™ was launched in the USA in April 2002.
