Using its proprietary drug delivery technologies, SkyePharma develops new formulations of approved pharmaceutical ingredients to provide a clinical benefit to patients.

There are nine approved products in the area of oral drug delivery that incorporate the Group’s proven proprietary technologies. The Group’s products are marketed in a number of countries throughout the world by leading and speciality pharmaceutical companies.

Solubility is an essential factor for drug effectiveness, independent of the route of administration. It is also a major challenge for pharmaceutical companies developing new pharmaceutical products, since nearly half of all new chemically-based drugs are insoluble or poorly soluble in water. Many, otherwise promising, compounds never reach the market. Other compounds reach the market but in a sub-optimal formulation, possibly providing low or unpredictable bioavailability, or posing an increased risk of side effects. Enhanced solubility technology can be used to reformulate such drugs and increase their commercial potential.

The insoluble drug delivery (IDD®) , DissoCubes™ and SLN® (Solid Lipid Nanoparticles) technology platforms enhance the uptake and safety of water-insoluble drugs across a broad range of therapeutic classes, including anaesthetics, anti-cancer agents and immunosuppressants.

Combining its formulation skills with controlled manufacturing processes, SkyePharma developed a new oral drug delivery technology, Geoclock®; that allows the preparation of chronotherapy-focused press-coated tablets.
