Research & Development

Based in Muttenz, near Basel in Switzerland, this facility specialises in oral, inhalation and solubilisation drug delivery technologies.  A total of around 140 employees from many different countries around the world, including specialists in delivery technologies, combine their skills to conduct innovative research and development. The majority of these are scientists, many of whom hold advanced qualifications.  

SkyePharma's employees have a wide range of expertise, including oral and inhaled formulation, powder and particle engineering and solid dose form manufacturing, particularly multi-layer tableting and press coating.  These specialists in delivery technologies combine their skills to conduct innovative research and development. The site covers over 9,000 square-metres and includes modern, well equipped laboratories.

Oral

The Geomatrix family of technologies enables the formulation of oral products which provide control over the amount, timing and location of the release of drug compounds in the human body. 

Inhalation

Innovative inhalation technologies provide the capabilities to develop advanced formulations of inhaled products in both dry powder inhalers (DPI), hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) metered dose inhalers (MDI).

Solubilisation

The solubilisation technology platform consists of three major enabling technologies IDD (insoluble drug delivery), Dissocubes and SLN (Solid Lipid Nanoparticles) to address formulation and delivery problems originating from poor solubility of biologically active compounds.
