SkyePharma uses its proprietary Geomatrix™ technology as the core of its oral delivery platform.
Geomatrix™ technology controls the amount, timing and location of the release of drug compounds in the human body. Geomatix™ technology allows us to produce tablets with a wide range of predictable and reproducible drug release profiles. For example, Geomatrix™ systems allow the simultaneous release of two different drugs, at different rates, from a single tablet, can deliver an initial burst of a drug for fast therapeutic effect, followed by controlled release at a constant rate, or deliver a drug to specific sites within the patient's digestive system, either via a single or multiple dose release.
The controlled release is achieved by constructing a multilayered tablet. The combination of layers, each with different rates of swelling, gelling and erosion, is responsible for the rate of drug release within the body. When first swallowed, for example, the drug concentration is high but the surface area is small. As time goes by and the core swells, the surface area increases to compensate for the decrease in drug concentration.
SkyePharma manufactures several Geomatrix™ products, Sular®, ZYFLO CR™, Coruno®, diclofenac-ratiopharm-uno® and Madopar DR®, SkyePharma also produces bio-batches for its collaborative partners.
